Hypnosis FAQs - (Leah Leynor - Only)

+ What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is best described as an altered state of consciousness. Through hypnosis we are able to connect to your subconscious mind where your memories and personal experiences have been stored. Through the use of suggestion, you will be able to make adjustments to your thoughts, feelings and behaviors for concerns such as the following: weight control, smoking cessation, fears or phobias, pain management, increasing self-esteem, stress management, personal empowerment and motivation, grief resolution, and academic concerns. The possibilities are endless! The use of hypnotherapy to assist you in personal improvement and growth is limited only by yourself.

+ What will my first hypnosis session be like?

Sessions last approximately an hour, however, your first session will be about an hour and a half. During the first session we will go through an intake interview where we discuss your concerns and answer any remaining questions that you may have. Next, we will engage in a few activities that will help me gauge how to best work with you. You will then close your eyes and listen to me with or without relaxation music (your choice). At the conclusion of your hypnosis session, I will then review with you a short self-hypnosis exercise that will become your “homework” until your next hypnosis appointment.

+ Can everyone be hypnotized?

The answer is yes, and no. Theoretically, the majority of people can be hypnotized, however, there are instances when someone may resist or believe it is impossible for him or her to be hypnotized. This may make it difficult for that particular individual to relax enough to enter a true hypnotic state.

+ Is hypnosis mind control?

Absolutely not! You, the client, will be aware of what is happening during your hypnosis session and have the ability to open your eyes and terminate the session at any time. You are in control and will not do or say anything that you would not ordinarily do in an alert and wakeful state.

+ Will I be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis?

Some clients do fall asleep during a hypnosis session, however, that is not typically the case. Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation in which you will be aware of what is happening and your subconscious mind is open to suggestion, yet not be in a sleep state or unconscious. You may feel as though you are daydreaming and completely relaxed.

+ Is hypnosis dangerous?

Hypnosis is not considered dangerous. However, you need to ensure that you are utilizing the services of a properly trained therapist. In the state of North Carolina, only medically-trained personnel, licensed mental health clinicians, and licensed clinical psychologists may practice as "hypnotherapists".

+ Does hypnosis really work?

Yes! And there is a growing amount of research that is showing evidence that hypnosis is effective. Hypnosis may assist in reducing or eliminating how pain is experienced in the body, decrease stress response, improve how the immune system is functioning, help to overcome repetitive or compulsive thoughts or behaviors, and is a useful addition to treatments for many medical and psychological diagnoses.
